What is the history of Brownsville?
Brownsville began as a sawmill settlement: I. E. Brown built a sawmill here in August 1851, per the 1879 History of Yuba County.
The 1879 History of Yuba County by Thompson & West tells the story. I. E. Brown built a sawmill here in August 1851 for $8,000, and he and partner John Hoyt also kept a hotel in a log house. When Martin Knox and P. E. Weeks bought the mill in 1852, they named the place Brownsville in Brown's honor. A store opened in 1853 and a large hotel in 1855. In 1878 Mr. and Mrs. Martin Knox founded the Knoxdale Institute, a school for young ladies, beside the hotel. The 1879 history placed the town on the Central Turnpike, 33 miles from Marysville. The state Division of Mines' 1976 gold-district bulletin also credits the name to I. E. Brown's 1851 sawmill.
Today the Yuba County Historic Resources Commission describes Brownsville as a quiet rural community known for annual events like the Brownsville Mountain Fair.
