What is the history of North San Juan?

Per the 1978 E Clampus Vitus marker on the Wells Fargo building, San Juan Hill was first mined in 1853 by Christian Kientz. He named it for San Juan de Ulloa in Mexico, which he had seen while serving with General Scott's army. When a post office opened in 1857, "North" was added to tell it apart from the older San Juan in San Benito County. The town grew rich on hydraulic mining.

The Wells Fargo & Company building (29349 Highway 49) handled gold and currency from 1854. Per its marker it later served as a clothing store, a Chinese laundry and store, and from 1934 a bar. The Methodist church on Flume Street dates to 1856. Its 1980 marker says it escaped three major fires that destroyed the town. United Methodist records show the congregation closed in December 2023.

New Bullards Bar Reservoir, run by Yuba Water Agency, reports 55 miles of shoreline, more than 20 miles of trails, and boating, fishing, camping, swimming and mountain biking. Emerald Cove Marina rents houseboats and other boats. The dam was completed in 1970 and, at 645 feet, Yuba Water calls it the second-tallest dam in California.
